The Update:
I enjoy staying at the Sacramento American Youth Hostel every
time I visit the capitol city of the state of California. I first started
staying in hostels 20-years ago when I was a single dad with
three young kids. They lived with their mom in Ohio. So It was
important to me that we spend our time together in some type
of family-home environment
, whether I had traveled to see them or they had come to California. I found the AYH organization and
a ton of fond memories were launched.
I shot this segment about three years ago and very little has
changed since then. Overnight per person dorm-bed and family
room rates have risen slightly since I was there. But the place still
offers very comfortable accommodations at reasonable prices. Plus
all hostels offer a fully equipped kitchen so you can prepare friends
and family meals just like you would if you were home.
Everything is within walking distance from the hostel including
California's state capitol building, the California State Rail museum,
an Amtrak station, live theaters, and tons of shopping.
Old Sacramento is also nearby. Visit there during September and you'll
land smack in the middle of "Gold Rush Days"--a weeklong celebration with living history performers, gold panning, gun fights, and "Sasparilla".
