The Details:
You are welcome to visit California's Fort Tejon State Historic Park any time during the year. However check with the website to track their calendar of annual events...like the civil war reenactment and a living history event. Watch for the Tejon Ranch exit off of Interstate 5 along a section of the highway that's nick-named "The Grapevine" about halfway between Los Angeles and Bakersfield, CA.
Even though no Civil War battles were ever fought at Fort Tejon or in California for that matter, the Civil War reenactment that is staged there is a joy to watch. It's a weekend long event and overnight camping in the park's campground is permitted. The reenactors take their staging very seriously. Don't expect them to ever drop out of character. And don't be surprised if a Union "Blue Coat" or a "Johnny Reb" offers you a tin mug of strong coffee when you pay an early morning visit to one of their camp sites.
Docents wander about throughout the event offering a variety of lessons on different aspects of this period during America's history.
