The Update:
Truly Allensworth State Historic Park is one of California's most interesting and haunting places I've ever visited. I was absolutely riveted by the stories shared of this once thriving community near Bakersfield, CA by on-site docents who are there during the park's annual celebration.
The establishment of Allensworth and it's continued existence for numerous years is a tale of courage, dedication, and perserverence. It provided a sanctuary in which to live and work for many who faced open prejudice in other communities throughout California and the rest of the USA. The families who once lived here prospered.
Today, many of the buildings still stand. They're filled with the historical furniture and accoutraments that were appropriate for that time, even down to the ink wells atop the school room desks.
Google the many websites devoted to Allensworth SHP for more information and for more pictures. And plan a visit during the annual celebration. Amtrak will even drop you off there from Los Angeles and from points north along it's Capitol Corrider route. Just remember, if you visit during the summer, it's hot.
I hope that I can return some day soon. Allensworth State Historic Park will always hold a place that is very dear in my heart.
